These stingrays do not pose a danger to humans. Previously, it was believed that manta rays could attack a diver, “hug” them from above with their fin-wings and crush them to death; There were also beliefs that a stingray was capable of swallowing a person. Fishermen believed that manta rays ate fish caught in the net and could also sink a ship by pulling the anchor. In 1978, in the Gulf of California, scuba divers swam in natural conditions with these peaceful animals for the first time and were convinced that they could be safely communicated underwater. Several scuba divers managed to take photographs with manta rays, including the author of the acclaimed novel Jaws, Peter Benchley.
