⏳ Extending your stay — the rule that changed
This is the single most out-of-date thing in older guides. The visa on arrival extension can no longer be completed entirely online. Since mid-2025 it requires an in-person visit to the immigration office covering your registered address, where they take fingerprints, a photo and a signature.
The flow is hybrid: register online, receive a QR code by email, attend the office for biometrics, then wait roughly 5–7 working days. Because of that, start the process 10–14 days before your visa expires, not in the final days. Your arrival day counts as day one.
Visa-free entry works differently: those 30 days cannot be extended or converted at all. If you might want longer, take the visa on arrival even if you qualify for visa-free.
⚠️ Overstaying is expensive
The fine is IDR 1,000,000 per day, counted from day one — two weeks over is IDR 14,000,000. Up to 59 days can be settled with the fine. From 60 days it becomes deportation and a blacklist, with re-entry bans running from six months to ten years.
Biometric exit checks mean an overstay is always detected. If your plans change, extend properly rather than hoping to pay quietly on the way out.

- Assuming a Western passport gets visa-free entry. It does not
- Assuming visa-free 30 days can be extended. It cannot
- Expecting to extend the VOA from your phone — biometrics are in person now
- Filing the arrival card more than 72 hours ahead, so it is rejected
- Paying the levy on a lookalike site. Only .go.id is official
- Staying in a private villa and not registering with local police — hotels do this for you, private hosts may not, and the fine is IDR 5,000,000

💉 Health requirements
There are no routine vaccination requirements and no COVID-era rules left. A yellow fever certificate is required only if you are arriving from a country on the transmission-risk list. The health declaration that used to be separate is now part of the All Indonesia arrival card.
